**Readers - Books and Conversation with Dr Norman Swan**
**Thursday 29th October | 8pm | Petersham Bowling Club**

Join us for a special Readers Books & Conversation event with Dr Norman Swan as he discusses his compelling new book, *The Brain Cliff*.

One of Australia's most trusted medical voices, Dr Swan has spent decades translating complex health research into practical, evidence-based advice. In *The Brain Cliff*, he turns his attention to one of our greatest fears: losing our mental sharpness as we age.

Many of us assume cognitive decline is inevitable, but Dr Swan argues we've been thinking about brain ageing all wrong. Drawing on the latest science and interviews with remarkable cognitive super-agers in their nineties and beyond, he explores what really helps our brains remain resilient, adaptable and healthy throughout life.

From memory and concentration to dementia prevention and lifelong cognitive health, this fascinating conversation will challenge common assumptions about ageing and offer a hopeful, practical roadmap for maintaining brain function well into later life.

Don't miss the opportunity to hear from one of Australia's leading health communicators in an enlightening discussion about how we can all keep our brains healthier for longer.

You’ve seen the “Spirits of the Hoey” book, the tribute to Sydney’s iconic Hopetoun Hotel by academics Liz Guiffre and Gregory Ferris with the photographs of Bryan “Cookie” Cook. Now you can experience the live gig.

Petersham Bowling Club will host “Spirits of The Hoey – A Live Love Letter To The Hopetoun Hotel” on Saturday October 31 and it’s a catalyst to convene a killer line-up with links to a much-loved scene.

Heading the bill is a reformation of Vrag, the band that would morph into Machine Gun Fellatio, with very special guest Christa Hughes on vocals.

Cathy Green - Hoey regular and member of bands like X, Hell To Pay, Universe, Automatic Cherry and Ian Rilen & The Love Addicts – is bringing her new outfit, Shiver of Destiny, from Melbourne for a special set that will include the songs of Ian Rilen.

Event organiser Edwin Garland is assembling The Hoey Barflies, a group featuring members of Box The Jesuit, Swirl, Laughing Clowns and Waxworks.

The classic line-up of The Vanilla Chainsaws will take the stage for the first time in almost 20 years. And Loene Carmen will open the night with a solo set with songs drawn from her long and storied Sydney career.

Spirits Of The Hoey: A Live Love Letter To The Hopetoun Hotel

Come and celebrate the release of Mitch L. Ryan’s 33 1/3 book on Dick Diver’s seminal album *Calendar Days*! Taking the album as a launching point into a discussion of Australian DIY music, politics, media, social history, and literature, the author will be joined by Giacomo Bianchino for a discussion. Following this, Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys and Ex-Colleague—two bands containing members discussed in the book—will perform. *Calendar Days* may be thirteen years old now, but the independent DIY ethos that surrounded the group are just as relevant as ever!

From the back of the book:

Critically acclaimed upon its 2013 release, Dick Diver's sophomore album *Calendar Days* poeticized the banality of daily life in melodic pop music that drew upon conversational language and local references, all sung with thick Australian accents and jangling guitars. It was a sound that would become emblematic of the micro-genre dolewave, a joking reference to a group of bands that emerged from the same scene on Australia's east coast.

This book uses *Calendar Days* to tease out the histories of the band, the scene, and the genre of dolewave. Situating it within a broader history of Australian independent music and politics from the late 2000s to the early 2010s, it not only offers the first historical account of a recent major movement in contemporary Australian music, but it also considers the unique conditions that Australian musicians operated within during the period, from social welfare issues, to blogging networks, to ever present debates around cultural identity.

Mitch L. Ryan on Dick Diver’s Calendar Days Book Launch w/ Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys + Ex-Colleague

Prepare to be captivated by Australia’s most riveting harp and fiddle duo, blending breathtaking musicianship with original music full of wonder.

Descending from the mountains are harp and fiddle duo Mickey & Michelle, whose energetic and virtuosic performances have captured hearts throughout Australia and New Zealand. Celebrated for their intricate arrangements and heartfelt songwriting, Mickey & Michelle weave a gorgeous ‘chamber-folk’ tapestry of original Celtic music infused with vocal harmony and fiery improvisations.

The duo’s journey began with a wild idea: to walk the length of New Zealand on the 3000km Te Araroa Trail for six months, performing concerts along the way. This adventure forged a deep connection between their music, the natural world and the communities they encountered, inspiring carefully crafted lyrics and instrumentals that invite listeners to reflect on their own connection with the natural world.

Following the release of their album *Solace in Wonder*, Mickey & Michelle continued this journey with a five-month Northern Hemisphere tour through Canada, Spain, England, Scotland, Wales and Iceland. Along the way, they hiked the 800km High Route of the Pyrenees, formed lasting friendships with musicians and fellow adventurers around the world, and found inspiration in the North’s brutal and beautiful landscapes.

Now returning to Sydney with new music shaped by these journeys, expect an evening of soaring melodies, virtuosic instrumentals and heartfelt songs as Mickey & Michelle push the boundaries of what harp and fiddle can do.

Guide Tones Music School Concert

For our seventh and final event at the Petersham Bowling Club for this year, we have invited a very special double billed line-up of Alexandra Spence and Mara.** **Mara Schwerdtfeger and Alexandra Spence are composers and artists based in Eora Sydney. With an intuitive approach to sound making that favours and explores the convergence of, and relationships between, environments, objects, memory, and listening, they have come together to explore the potential magic and intimacy of everyday sound.

Performing with a changing array of sound sources – voice, viola, clarinet, handmade instruments, tapes, sinetones, bells, rocks, computers – Mara and Alex create structured improvisations that highlight their field recording and instrumental practices. Individually they have presented their work both nationally and internationally, and in 2027 will release and tour a new album together.
