Bento Beats is a special one-night concert bringing together Japanese taiko, shinobue bamboo flute and didgeridoo in a powerful cross-cultural performance at Northcote Social Club.

From Japan, the concert welcomes two special guest artists: Nakagome Kenta from Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble KODO, and Haruyoshi Tsumura from Miyake Jima Geino Doshi Kai.

Kenta brings the creative power and contemporary energy of KODO, shaped through years of international performance, powerful taiko solos, composition and cross-genre collaboration. Haruyoshi carries the living festival tradition of Miyake taiko from Miyake-jima, a powerful drumming style passed down through the Tsumura family and shared internationally through performances and workshops.

Alongside Ryuji Hamada from Taikoz in Sydney and Sanshi, a Japanese didgeridoo artist based in Perth, Bento Beats creates a unique meeting of Japan and Australia through wood, bamboo, skin, breath and rhythm.

The evening opens with Hachijo Taiko Party, a lively audience-participation taiko experience where everyone is invited to join the rhythm before the main act begins.

Infusing dark electronic hiphop with defiant punk energy, Racerage collabs with other BIPOC, queer and trans artists to create frosty political protest rap. Prepare for hiphop as truthtelling: real, raw and clawed from their core.

You might be familiar with Hunny Machete as a singer of sad songs but she’s done with that now. Inspired by the high-dopamine slut bangers of Kim Petras and Ashnikko et al, while also called to speak to the political struggles affecting our communities, she takes the genre beyond the lyrical domain of ‘I’m hot and I like to fuck’ to ‘I’m hot and I like to fuck and I hate cops’. We’re all angry, we’re all tired, we’re all sad, but let’s have a dance about it.

Captain Beep-boop plays queer electronic punk music on a DIY modified Testra "Bluephone" payphone synthesiser.

This week Piggietails, Hard Rubbish and Wriding are stopping by for a show.

Built on friendship and an initial relaxed approach to songwriting towards the end of 2023, the band have slowly but surely slotted their way into the local Melbourne music scene, playing with the likes of Cool Sounds and Mess Esque. Taking notes from 80s Australiana guitar pop, the indie rock stylings of Yo La Tengo and a splash of the revivalist jangle of the naughties, the band pull the best bits from every era creating lyrically engaging simplistic songs that still manage to pull you into their personal world, humorously described by the band as “everyday music”.

Hard Rubbish are an Australian rock Band from Southern Australia, Starting out as a primarily pub rock outfit, the group has drifted towards are more dissonant country and folk sound, evident in their only full length release ‘Evergreen 19-24’. Marking their first release since that album, the bands double single ‘Seen’ and ‘Barking at Me’ continue this trajectory, while finding new footing. Recording in Melbourne, The double single enlists vocalist, guitarist and violinist Claire Treddinick for the first time, after months of Treddinick joining the ensemble for live gigs across Victoria and forming part of the band's sound. Produced, Mixed and recorded by Dylan Young (Way Dynamic) the depth of the groups sound is displayed in both songs, with ‘Seen’ taking on a sparse, sentimentality, and Barking at Me harking back to the indie rock roots of singer and songwriter Jason Katsaras’s former band, Dead roo. Katsaras says Seen was in development shortly after the band’s last single ‘Distort it’. “This song was written after having moved for the third time in as many years to Melbourne. Maybe it’s a bit naff but I did feel a touch invisible at the time, losing touch with people I care about and finding my footing in a new place, all the while staring down the barrel of turning 30.” “While Seen was written over a long period, and reflected a prolonged experience, Barking at me was mostly written as a bit of a response to the ‘hustle’ culture I felt I was constantly being subjected to, particularly in a new city. It’s a bit of a piss take, but also mentions some things I would genuinely love to do if there were more hours in the day.”

Naarm slowcore band Wriding are known for arresting, explosive live shows alongside acts such as Bluetile Lounge, A Place to Bury Strangers, Garage Sale and No Hoper. rFollowing a breakout debut show in February 2025, the track distills their signature rural despair and alienation into three minutes of tension and release.Channelling rural despair and hardship, their lyrics and windswept arrangements evoke a turbulent, drought-stricken desolation - and sometimes, the warm glow of a back door light left on.

NO QUESTIONS make rock from the future for the freaks of our very f*cked up present. Melbourne born and based, the young two-piece’s live sound stretches from dark and modern hyper-rock to stripped fretless nylon heartbreak. In the spaces no one else is looking; that’s where you’ll find them.

Turi Tharma, an artist who embraces his Tamil roots and entails his upbringing in Carnatic music into his modern take on Alternative, Electronic, R&B.

Francesca Fimeri is a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Melbourne’s west (Naarm). Her music blends rich, emotionally driven songwriting with a refined jazz sensibility, developed through her studies at the VCA. Influenced by artists like Samora Pinderhughes, Yebba, and Bon Iver, she merges contemporary pop and soul to create ballads that are both intimate and expansive. With vulnerability, technical nuance, and a deep sense of yearning, Fimeri is an emerging voice in Australia’s contemporary music landscape.
