This week NO QUESTIONS, Turi Tharma and Francesca Fimeri are stopping by for a show.

NO QUESTIONS make rock from the future for the freaks of our very f*cked up present. Melbourne born and based, the young two-piece’s live sound stretches from dark and modern hyper-rock to stripped fretless nylon heartbreak. In the spaces no one else is looking; that’s where you’ll find them.

Turi Tharma, an artist who embraces his Tamil roots and entails his upbringing in Carnatic music into his modern take on Alternative, Electronic, R&B.

Francesca Fimeri is a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Melbourne’s west (Naarm). Her music blends rich, emotionally driven songwriting with a refined jazz sensibility, developed through her studies at the VCA. Influenced by artists like Samora Pinderhughes, Yebba, and Bon Iver, she merges contemporary pop and soul to create ballads that are both intimate and expansive. With vulnerability, technical nuance, and a deep sense of yearning, Fimeri is an emerging voice in Australia’s contemporary music landscape.

Social Sanctuary is proud to be sponsored by Mountain Goat.

This week Munroe are stopping by for a special EP launch show, with Norwood and Grace De Vos.

Munroe blend jangly, coming-of-age alternative rock with brooding, reflective ballads. Known for their emotionally charged performances and endearingly awkward stage banter (emphasis on awkward), Munroe invites audiences into a space that feels both personal and unpredictable. The Naarm-based, four-piece outfit, are excited to be celebrating the release of their new EP, ‘Said And Done’, out September 10th.

Grace de Vos is a Melbourne/Naarm based songwriter. Rooted in folk but not confined by it, her music leans confidently into indie, rock, and pop influences. Grace writes songs that hold space for the unsaid. Whether she's reflecting on conflict, self reckoning or the messiness of human relationships, her lyrics speak from the kind of perspective that only comes with distance, honesty, and time, the result is emotional truth without apology. On stage, Grace brings a quiet intensity: open, vulnerable, and deliberate.

Norwood is the project of Naarm/Melbourne based singer-songwriters Olivia Bolmat and Nathaniel Peacock. Formed through a shared admiration of upfront lyricism and inseparable harmonies, the pair have always aimed to create songs that find weight in their unassuming tenderness. The band fuses Americana inspiration with the alt-folk sounds of their home city and weaves their way through past conversations and memories; songs of old weatherboard share houses, suburban floods, failed networking events and late night curbside consultations.

Africubismo is a bold new transcontinental collaboration bringing together four master musicians to explore the deep musical currents flowing between West Africa and Cuba.

Featuring:

Ray Pereira (percussion) – one of Australia’s foremost percussionists

Amadou Suso (kora) – master Gambian griot and virtuoso of the 21-string kora

Yunior Terry Cabrera (bass) – internationally acclaimed Cuban bassist and composer

Julien Wilson (saxophone) – Award winning Australian saxophonist and improviser

Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Afrocubismo, Africubism journeys across the Atlantic to trace the shared rhythmic DNA of Mandé music and Afro-Cuban traditions. From the rolling cascades of kora lines to the polyrhythmic drive of rumba and son, the project reveals the circular migration of melody, groove and spirit between West Africa and the Caribbean.

Rather than recreating repertoire, Africubism reimagines this dialogue through original compositions and improvisation. The ensemble bridges griot storytelling, Cuban rhythmic architecture, contemporary jazz language and diasporic groove, creating music that is at once ancestral and forward-looking.

Gamelan DanAnda will be bringing the fireworks and blazing interlocking of Balinese Gamelan Gong Kebyar to the Bolt Ensemble. Gamelan DanAnda most often perform traditional Balinese repertoire everywhere from Australia's leading festivals to community gatherings, but they also have a diverse contemporary fusion practice with successful collaborations with Joelistics, Komang, Firetail, and their award-winning soundtrack to the Diets and Deities video game with Kuya James x Tutup Mulut. Head down to their studio in Thornbury to give it a try sometime in their community classes.

Taite Music Prize-winning New Zealand songwriter Anthonie Tonnon presents his immersive new live show, Cinematographer.

Three years in the making, Cinematographer combines live electronic music, cinematic storytelling and visual design into an immersive performance. Featuring visual DJing by Erica Sklenars, videography by Theo Taylor, styling by Karlya Smith and design by Daniel Alexander, the show sees Tonnon playing the roles of DJ, singer, documentarian and revolutionary lecturer.

The show explores two timelines: the Situationist International in France and Italy during the 1960s, and Whanganui, New Zealand at the turn of the millennium – a mysterious, forgotten city where a new battle is being waged against what Guy Debord famously called The Society of the Spectacle.

Swapping his guitar for a vocoder, and transforming two Synthstrom Deluges into honorary turntables, Tonnon connects these seemingly distant worlds through the musical language of turn-of-the-millennium dance culture.

"Cinematographer is part film, part francophile performance lecture, part disco club set," says Tonnon. "It's a world that we've built for this new music, exploring some newfound passions – the French avant-garde, cinema, urban politics of the 1960s, turn-of-the-millennium dance culture and documentary films, and the glorious, mystifying city of Whanganui."

The ambitious audiovisual performance introduces an entirely new body of work developed with Tonnon's band and longtime producer Jonathan Pearce (The Beths). The new single and video "Executive Assistant" offers the first glimpse into this new world – Tonnon's first new music in three years.

~ we all share a mother ~ we can free each other ~

Two years ago, Sam Richardson and Scout Hook packed up their guitars and their dog, Winty, into a secondhand caravan, beginning a songwriting roadtrip along Australia’s east coast. Following their adventures, SAMSCOUT’s debut album ‘Painted Lines’ was born. Produced by Lewis Hosie in his home studio, the record features Ash Griffin, Brendan Hook, Warwick Hook, Ben Ingvarson, Michael Ingvarson, Shane Lestideau, Julian Steel and Sam Watts.

On Saturday 7th November, SAMSCOUT welcome you to celebrate the launch of ‘Painted Lines’ at Northcote Social Club. Sam and Scout are joined by Lewis (keys), Ash (guitar), Ben (drums) and Sam (bass). Expect soaring vocals and dreamy instrumentations that will transport you to the ocean.

Through SAMSCOUT, music becomes a sanctuary - to share in the ups and downs of being human, to navigate relationships, and to get back in the driver’s seat of our lives.

BLAKE APPELQVIST

Blake Appelqvist (they/them) is a Naarm-based artist making alternative R&B through expansive production, soulful vocals and intimate songwriting. Following the release of CALI and IKYLT, Blake has introduced a sound that feels both expansive and singular, ahead of their debut EP arriving this November. Rooted in queer storytelling and shaped by the intimacy and emotional precision of theatrical musicianship, their music moves between atmospheric pop, electronic textures and soulful R&B to create a world entirely their own.

JESSIE MONK & NOLESS

Jessie Monk and NoLess are musicians based in Naarm. Having weaved in and out of eachothers work, including album recordings, writing, practice, national and international tours, the pair are delighted to share a set supporting SAMSCOUT's album release.

NoLess is the musical alias of Naarm-based songwriter Aidan Ryan. Blending raw and vulnerable songwriting with lush, dynamic guitar-based compositions, he has blossomed into a sonic language that is truly his own. Weaving the personal, political and spiritual, his songs traverse eclectic sound worlds nested in contemporary folk, indie, rock, soul and jazz. Inspired by land, relationships, spirituality and sexuality, the music's shifting landscape ranges from heart-wrenching love songs and soulful folk prayers to political anthems and queer liberation cries.

Jessie Monk is an artist devoted to making space for the old ways in the new world - through song, story and ritual. Drawing inspiration from the folk traditions of her gaelic-ancestry, Naarm-based artist is obsessed with old myths, poetry, stories and songs from various traditions and lineages throughout the ages. Weaving them amongst new threads of jazz/experimental sounds, and drawing their inspirations into original compositions, Jessie and the people she plays with create atmospheres of tangible and, at the same time, experimental folklore.
