Seventy-one shows. Countless niche obsessions. An alarming number of facts nobody asked for.

**Nerd Nite Melbourne is back for show #71**, bringing three more wonderfully nerdy humans to the stage to teach us about the things they simply cannot stop thinking about.

The second last show of the 2026 Nerd Nite Melbourne year, but we're not slowing down! This October, we're kicking off by getting a bit spooky with finding human remains, investigating bewildering text messages from a mother, and a treat from an international guest - the host of Nerd Nite Fort Collins (US)!

Come to get creeped out (by either the bodies or the texts, your choice), and see how the US does Nerd Nite!

**Victoria Berezowski**

Where should I hide the body?!

**Description**: After someone commits a homicide, a common after thought is “What should I do with the body?!” In an effort to get rid of the evidence, some people will bury their victims, and unfortunately, these can be really hard to find. My research looks at combing what we know about human behaviour and some cool ground monitoring technologies to help find these graves. This is really important not only because it can help us prosecute the person responsible, but it can also bring the victims back home to their loved ones.

**Bio**: Toss out your conference bio and start fresh. Unless you have a Nobel prize or a teen choice award, the credentials probably aren't important to our audience. Tell us what you're passionate about. Be human.

Tori is a forensic anthropologist (think of the TV show Bones!). If she is not out in field looking for graves, she is in the classroom teaching the next generation of forensic scientists at Deakin University.

**Aaron Agostinia**

Real Texts My Mother Has Sent Me

**Description**: I am a biologist, but by far the most interesting creature I have ever encountered is my mother. I have known her (literally) my entire life, but I am yet to figure her out. She remains disinterested in my stories unless I provide the full legal names of every participant; she insists I have never seen Minions 2; she once asked me what a gay wedding was. Come watch me deliver her texts like slam poetry and spiral into tangents about literally the most interesting person I have ever met.

**Bio**: Aaron Agostini is a writer, scientist, and Teen Choice Award winner originally from New Jersey, currently living in Melbourne, Australia --- completely of his own volition; no one made him move here. His scientific work has stretched from brewing beer to stem cells to marsupial skulls, while his creative work explores themes of repetition, anxiety, and repetition. He finishes his PhD in May, wants a job, and insists his relationship with his mother is completely fine. He is also a chronic liar about winning Teen Choice Awards. See proof of competence at aaronagostini.com or find him at @supplemental_figures.

**Socials**: @supplemental_figures (Instagram, youtube and tiktok)

**Justin Fritz **

You Had to be There

**Description**: Nerd Nite is great for one reason: the speakers reanimate what they have lived. They stand up and hand over a passion in a way no screen and no automation can manage. I have lost whole evenings to this, completely absorbed and enchanted by whatever the topic of the day turned out to be.

So is this a talk about Nerd Nite, at Nerd Nite? Kind of. But no.

It is a talk about camaraderie, community and enchantment, and what they are actually worth. I have no answers to the big issues facing us, and I say us because we are all connected. What a room like this can do is draw a map between us, an understanding of the world we are in. You cannot plot a course without one.

I have been lucky enough to be in the room for a few remarkable things. I will bring what I can of them.

**Bio**: Justin Fritz designs the insides of computer chips. Some of his work is in Microsoft's HoloLens, some in the FPGAs running Azure data centres, and some in programmable logic at Xilinx. Before all that he navigated KC-130s for the US Marines, and in between he took a master's in information theory, the mathematics of what survives being sent somewhere. He hosts Nerd Nite Fort Collins, writes trivia software nobody asked for, and is visiting from Colorado with his wife Jamie, a Nerd Nite boss in her own right, who has heard all of this before and is coming anyway.

NERD NITE #71

Indie-folk songwriter **Rowena** **Wise** and her full band celebrate sophomore album *Bad Things Feel Good** at Howler, a tender, point-blank look at the pain of transformation, and what it means to be flesh and blood.

Written over two years of near-constant touring and recorded live over three days at The Ratshack in Collingwood with producer Rob Muinos (Julia Jacklin, Didirri), the album traces heartbreak, estrangement, and the knottier growing pains of adulthood through candid poetic lyricism and a raw live band production. With Richard Bradbeer on bass and Jess Ellwood on drums, the songs hold space rather than demand attention - and in a room like Howler, that kind of restraint hits differently.

Rowena's Melbourne headline shows have sold out both times. Since debuting in 2018, she has amassed over 10 million streams, earned airplay across **triple j**, **Double j** and **Unearthed**, and toured extensively across Australia, the UK, Europe, the USA and Canada, supporting artists including **Holy Holy, Ball Park Music, Bernard Fanning** and **Paul** **Dempsey**. Her 2024 debut album, *Senseless Acts of Beauty*, was praised by **CLASH Magazine** as “*carefully etched indie folk*” and shortlisted for the **Australian Music Prize**. Her highly anticipated sophomore album, *Bad Things Feel Good**, a tender, point-blank meditation on transformation, is out August 7, 2026 via Beloved Records. *"Carefully etched indie folk"* — **CLASH Magazine** *"Fragrant introspection"* — **FLOOD**

**Tour supported by Double J.**

**With support on the night from Hannah McKittrick Trio & Ullah (solo).**

ROWENA WISE - Bad Things Feel Good* Album Tour with Hannah McKittrick Band + Ullah (solo)

Expect a few extra tunes thrown in for the diehards....because of course.

**With support from The Wellingtons Duo.**

BOB EVANS - Suburban Songbook 20th Anniversary Tour

Violinist, composer and improviser Xani Kolac has spent more than a decade redefining the possibilities of the electric violin within contemporary and improvised music. Drawing on influences as diverse as Jimi Hendrix, Stuff Smith, Camille and Björk, alongside her deep roots in jazz and improvisation, she has forged a singular musical voice that continues to push the boundaries of her instrument.

KOŁACZ is Xani's new work exploring identity, belonging and the ways names carry history across generations. Sparked by the restoration of the Polish diacritic to her family name, a small mark lost through migration, the work asks how movement across borders, culture and family history shape who we become.

Bringing together Australian and international collaborators performing together for the first time, KOŁACZ features renowned multi-instrumentalist Helen Svoboda (double bass, voice, electronics), long-time collaborator Justin Olsson (drums, percussion), and, in her Australian debut, Estonian-Swedish artist Tuulikki Bartosik (accordion, kannel, voice).

Commissioned by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival as part of its annual Take Note program, KOŁACZ is a bold and deeply personal new work from one of Australia's most compelling creative voices.

PINDORAMA PRESENTS 'A SAIDEIRA' with support by SambrazuKa

DISCOLEIL is heading northside for our next edition, taking over Howler Garden for a night of disco house. After spending summer on the beach, and winter in the CBD, we're bringing the DISCOLEIL feeling into our favourite garden bar this spring. Headlined by Joey Coco, with strong support from HAUSWiFE, Ben San Clare, ONEDINAYA, and 0SMR, expect a dancefloor moving from the first track until late.

Inspired by the glamour and freedom of Studio 54 and the beach clubs of Europe, DISCOLEIL is all about bringing people together through music, good drinks, and a seriously good night out. Whether you're coming with your usual crew or turning up to dance with strangers, everyone's welcome.

We've brought some of Melbourne's best local selectors to the DISCOLEIL dancefloor, and we're excited to bring another carefully curated lineup to Howler Garden.

One night. One dance floor. One very good reason to stay out on a Sunday.

See you northside. 🪩

**The theme is: Choosing Hope: Stories of what got us through**

✨ Choosing Hope: Finding the spark (and the laugh) that keeps us going

Hope shows up in all kinds of ways: a kind word, a lucky break or even a funny mishap that reminds us things can turn around. Six storytellers across six generations share the unexpected, often hilarious, sometimes tender moments that carried them through a tricky time. These aren't perfect endings but real stories of resilience, humour and the kind of hope that sneaks in when you least expect it.

If you've ever needed a reason to smile in the middle of a tough time, this night is for you. You'll laugh, you might tear up but most of all you'll leave with the reminder that hope (and humour) are never far away.
